5 things I am thankful for

It is important to recognise what has gotten us to where we are, to take count of our surroundings and our blessings. In my life, I have many things I grateful for.

My family has always supported my every whim, they’ve help me correct my mistakes and challenge me at my crossroads. The symbiotic nature of my relationship with my family has led to where I am. Without their constant support, I would not be able to brave the world. Albeit, that support has been heavily financial in my earlier years. My parents have invested a lot in my education and livelihood, and for that I am thankful.

Life is bland without friends, and the second thing I am grateful for is them. I have met many people in my travels and my life, and a few have anchored with me. It is to those people that I confide in, I laugh with and I depend on. In my times of need they were there. They helped me sail thru the times, rough seas or calm. They are my safe harbours in the turbulence of life.

The third is my mind. That may seem like an arrogant if not ignorant answer. But I refer to my mind in the broadest of contexts. My personality, my thoughts, my creative spark and even my sanity (sometimes). It is these things that I hold dear, and comparatively, they are also the mechanism with which I hold things dear.

The fourth is freedom.

“Out of two hundred and six sovereign states, at least a hundred and ninety eight have freedom”.

– Will McAvoy, Newsroom. Played by Jeff Daniels.

But nevertheless, it’s wide spread popularity does not demean its value. Rather its popularity is its strongest ally. Its popularity highlights and signifies its importance. My freedom allows me to speak my mind, to live my life in a way I see fit. It lets me be myself, whom ever I choose that to be. But I especially revere freedom as it allows all of my fellow man to do the same. It is then that we have a truly functional society. One who’s populous can redirect, shape and influence its course. True freedom is when the very people who inhabit the society are the ones responsible for its future.

There are many things that I am thankful for that I will not have the ability to list here. Therefore it makes this last choice seem more important than the others.

The internet.

Not commonly something that one would be thankful for, however, I believe it plays an important part of my life. It is a single source that provides so very much. Founded on the concept of communication, the Internet has grown to much greater depths. A recent report shows that in the last ten years, internet use around the world has doubled. In today’s fast paced modern world, it is the fabric of society and the ether of an ever growing connected village. For me personally, it is a means of access to a range of things that help me lead a normal functioning life.
